As an annual tradition, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) participated in the national “Take Your Child to Work Day”. Close to 70 children between the ages of 8-18 familiarized themselves with their parent’s workplace on Thursday, May 15, 2014.
Activities for the day included a welcome briefing by Fire Chief Dave Downey, a full hour of interaction with our Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) canines, a tour of the Emergency Operations Center, a presentation about the MDFR’s Venom Response Team, a tour of our new state-of-the-art Communications Center, and an Ocean Rescue presentation. Moreover, children took part in a mock Firefighter Academy where they toured MDFR’s Training Center, tried out bunker gear, and learned how to use a fire hose. They also participated in a mock firefighting exercise where they had to locate the victim to be rescued using a thermal imaging camera.
